A tourist boat capsized at the Bargi Dam reservoir in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday evening, 30 April, killing at least four people and leaving 18 passengers missing after a sudden and violent storm overwhelmed the vessel. The incident is among the deadliest water tourism accidents recorded at the reservoir in recent years.

How the Accident Unfolded

The boat, a bimini-top tourist vessel carrying more than 30 passengers, was navigating the backwaters of the Narmada River near Khamariya Island — a popular sightseeing destination within the reservoir's vast expanse — when high-velocity winds and turbulent weather struck without warning. Eyewitnesses described the sky darkening rapidly as the storm intensified, leaving the crew little time to steer toward safety.

As waves rose sharply, the boat lost stability and overturned, plunging dozens of tourists into the deep waters of the reservoir. Local administration officials stated that the primary cause of the capsizing appears to be the sheer intensity of the weather event, which overwhelmed the vessel's capacity to remain upright.

Rescue Operations Under Way

Emergency response was initiated shortly after the alarm was raised. The Bargi Police and a specialised team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived at the scene to conduct search operations under extremely challenging conditions, including fading light and the vast expanse of open water.

Anjul Ayank Mishra, City Superintendent of Police for the Bargi zone, confirmed that four bodies have been recovered from the water so far. 15 individuals were successfully rescued through the swift intervention of emergency teams and local divers. Divers are focusing their search around the submerged boat and surrounding currents near Khamariya Island.

Missing Passengers and Ongoing Search

Approximately 18 people remain unaccounted for, according to current estimates, though official figures are being continuously updated as passenger details are cross-verified with survivor accounts and available records. Rescue operations are continuing despite logistical difficulties posed by the reservoir's scale and deteriorating light conditions.
