Bargi Dam boat capsize: 6 dead, 15 missing as rescue ops continue overnight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At least six people are dead and 15 remain missing after a Madhya Pradesh Tourism cruise boat capsized in the Bargi Dam reservoir in Jabalpur district on Thursday evening, 30 April, officials said. 19 passengers have been rescued so far, as a large-scale overnight search operation continues in the reservoir.
How the Accident Happened
The cruise boat, carrying approximately 40 to 45 passengers, overturned around 300 metres from the dam's embankment following a sudden storm with strong winds. Bargi City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Anjul Mishra confirmed that an abrupt change in weather conditions caused the vessel to lose balance and sink. The incident occurred near Khamariya Island at the reservoir.
According to Yogendra Richhariya, an official from the Tourism Department, the ill-fated vessel was built in 2006, had a licensed capacity of 60 passengers, and was the only operational cruise boat at Bargi Dam — the second vessel is currently non-functional.
Rescue Operations on War Footing
Rescue teams led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and other agencies have been working through the night despite challenges posed by darkness and intermittent rain. Teams are using powerful searchlights to conduct coordinated underwater and surface searches.
In a notable development, SDRF personnel used gas cutters to breach the hull of the submerged vessel and rescued a passenger who had been trapped inside for nearly three hours. The sunken vessel has since been secured with ropes, and efforts are ongoing to retrieve it from the water.
Government Response and Relief Measures
Public Works Department Minister Rakesh Singh reached the site and reviewed the ongoing rescue operations. He confirmed that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed that financial assistance of ₹4 lakh each be provided to the families of the deceased, and that comprehensive medical arrangements are being made for the injured.
