The Jabalpur administration in Madhya Pradesh confirmed on Sunday, 4 May 2025 that the search and rescue operation at Bargi Dam has officially concluded following the recovery of the body of the last missing person. The tragedy, triggered by the capsizing of a tourist cruise boat during a severe storm on the evening of 30 April, has now claimed 13 lives, according to police officials.

Final Recoveries Mark End of Multi-Day Search

The body of Kamaraj was recovered on Sunday, bringing the multi-day search effort to a close. Earlier that same morning, rescue teams found the body of nine-year-old Mayuran, a resident of Trichy and Kamaraj's nephew, near the site of the accident. On Saturday, teams had recovered the bodies of four-year-old Viraj Soni and six-year-old Sri Tamil, adding to the mounting grief surrounding the disaster.

While 13 lives were lost, 28 individuals were successfully rescued from the water, according to officials, through the combined efforts of local residents and specialised rescue teams.

How the Accident Unfolded

The boat capsized around 5.30 pm on 30 April near Khamariya Island on Bargi Dam. Eyewitnesses described a sudden and fierce storm that caused the vessel to lose control under the force of massive waves. The intensity of the wind reportedly left passengers with no time to react.

Among the most harrowing discoveries during the rescue phase was the body of Marina Massey, found holding her four-year-old son, Trishaan, tightly against her chest. She had reportedly secured the child inside her own life jacket in a desperate effort to save him — a sight that left rescue workers and onlookers in profound grief.

Safety Lapses Under Scrutiny

Investigations into the disaster have revealed serious safety violations. Although tickets were reportedly issued for only 29 passengers, more than 40 tourists were on board at the time of the capsizing — significantly over capacity. The boat was also allowed to depart despite an Orange alert issued by the Meteorological Department, warning of wind speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Reports further indicate that many passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time of the capsize.

The Jabalpur administration is now facing pointed questions over its oversight of safety protocols at the dam, including how the vessel was permitted to sail under such conditions.

Victims' Remains Transported Home

The bodies of several victims have been transported to their home cities for final rites. The remains of three members of the Massey family were sent to New Delhi on Saturday, while the bodies of two women from the same group were dispatched to Coimbatore via air cargo.

First Responders and Rescue Operation

The initial rescue effort was led by local fishermen and farmers who acted as first responders, pulling 15 people to safety before specialised units from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and police arrived to take over the operation. Their swift action is credited with preventing a higher death toll.

With the search operation now officially closed, authorities face mounting pressure to hold accountable those responsible for the safety failures that allowed an overloaded vessel to sail into a storm-warning zone.
