New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) Opener Tammy Beaumont expressed her excitement regarding the return of left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone to the England squad prior to their T20I series against India, which kicks off at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

Sophie had taken a hiatus from domestic cricket earlier this month due to a quad injury to focus on her well-being. She was previously omitted from England's rosters for the white-ball series against the West Indies while recuperating from a knee injury, but subsequently made her return with Lancashire in domestic white-ball matches.

“Having her back fit is fantastic. She is a vital part of our team and has been recognized as one of the best bowlers globally for years. The fact that we performed well against the West Indies without her makes it even more exciting to welcome her back, especially considering her personality in the dressing room. She’s someone you want by your side in challenging situations, and we will definitely need that against India,” Tammy remarked to reporters on Thursday.

England is set to compete in five T20Is against India, followed by three ODIs, which serve as excellent preparation for both teams ahead of this year's 50-over World Cup in India, with Colombo, Sri Lanka, designated as a neutral venue.

“Playing against India is always a great indicator of our team's standing. We have a significant winter ahead with the World Cup in India, and they are undoubtedly going to present a tougher challenge than the West Indies did. This extended series of five T20s and three ODIs is a prime opportunity for us to assess our capabilities,” she continued.

“India has a young, emerging team that we may not have seen before, but with the WIPL, we know there’s a wealth of talent emerging rapidly, so it will be a challenging series. I would love to improve our record against India, and that’s a key objective for me this series,” she added.

The last encounter between India and England on English soil was in 2022 when India’s off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma made headlines by running out Charlie Dean from the non-striker's end at Lord’s.

Tammy emphasized that there are no lingering tensions surrounding that incident, particularly since Deepti and Charlie have played together for the London Spirit in The Hundred.

“That incident is behind us. Charlie and Deepti have been teammates at London Spirit. Such events are part of the game. It’s in the laws of cricket. Unless the rules change to clarify what counts and what doesn’t, it will continue happening. We need to adapt to that, unfortunately. I’m sure there will be external discussions about the Lord’s game, but we will ensure our bat is behind the line when we take off and maintain a competitive spirit against India as always,” she concluded.
