New Delhi, June 7 (NationPress) England’s talented left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone has decided to step away from domestic cricket to address a minor quad injury and focus on her overall well-being, according to a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Saturday.
The ECB also confirmed that Sophie will remain eligible for selection in England’s forthcoming white-ball series against India, which kicks off on June 28 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. “Sophie has been coping with a quad issue for the past week, but more crucially, she feels the need to take a short break from cricket to prioritize her health,” they stated.
“We fully support her decision. Our goal is to have Sophie ready for the India series, but her immediate focus should be on feeling better. We all concur that taking this break could be advantageous for her,” remarked head coach Charlotte Edwards in her statement.
At just 26, Sophie is the leading wicket-taker for England in Women’s T20Is with 137 wickets and holds the title of the top-ranked ODI bowler. However, she was omitted from England's current squad for the ongoing white-ball series against the West Indies due to her recovery from a knee injury.
This knee injury had previously caused her to miss the start of Lancashire's domestic season. Following her recovery, Sophie participated in two 50-over matches and six T20 games for her county side but had to withdraw from their match against Hampshire on Tuesday due to the quad issue.
Although England has comfortably secured victories in both their ODI and T20I series against the West Indies, they are set to face a more formidable challenge against Harmanpreet Kaur’s India in a series that includes three ODIs and five T20Is. India is also the host nation for the upcoming ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 30 to November 2.
