London, June 13 (NationPress) Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone is making her much-anticipated return to the England women's T20I team for the forthcoming five-match series against India, kicking off on June 28 at Trent Bridge. This comes after England's impressive 3-0 victory over the West Indies, marking the inaugural series for new coach Charlotte Edwards and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Earlier this month, Sophie took a hiatus from domestic competitions to address a quad injury and focus on her health. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed her availability for the white-ball series versus India.
Previously, Sophie was excluded from England's squads for the West Indies series as she recuperated from a knee injury, though she did participate in domestic white-ball matches for Lancashire. With her return to the squad, along with pacer Lauren Bell, leg-spinner Sarah Glenn has been omitted.
“It’s fantastic to have Sophie back, and we’re eager to integrate her into the team. Her skills are undeniable and will serve as an asset. Unfortunately, this means Sarah Glenn misses out. We have a wealth of spinners, and it’s regrettable we cannot accommodate everyone. This presents a wonderful opportunity for Sarah to return to The Blaze and compete in the Vitality Blast,” Charlotte expressed in an ECB statement on Friday.
The five T20Is will take place at Trent Bridge, Bristol County Ground, The Oval, Old Trafford, and Edgbaston from June 28 to July 12. Following this, England and India will engage in a three-match ODI series, with the ECB announcing the hosts’ squad at a later date.
This 50-over series will further refine the combinations for both India and England, especially with the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup slated for September 30 to November 2.
“We’re genuinely excited to face India. They are among the top teams globally, and it will be a significant challenge for us.”
“There was much to applaud in the West Indies series, but we also identified areas for improvement – we’re always striving to enhance our performance. Five matches against India in front of enthusiastic crowds at premier venues will be immensely beneficial. This series is crucial as we gear up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at home,” Charlotte added.
