Kolkata, Sep 1 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police have apprehended Deshraj Singh, the suspect in the murder of college student Ishita Mallick, in Krishnanagar of Nadia district, officials reported on Monday.
As per police sources, he was captured in a region close to the Uttar Pradesh-Nepal border on Sunday.
Deshraj Singh was transported to the Kotwali police station in Krishnanagar under transit remand on Monday morning. Prior to this, his maternal uncle, Kuldeep Singh, was taken into custody in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Following an interrogation of the uncle, the police were able to locate Deshraj.
On August 25, Deshraj (23) fatally shot Ishita (19) at close range in her residence in Krishnanagar, firing three shots to her head.
Post-incident, the authorities believed that Deshraj escaped to his family home in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. Despite relentless efforts from various teams in the Krishnanagar police district, they struggled to apprehend the suspect until now.
According to police reports, Deshraj resided with his mother and sister in a rented accommodation in Kanchrapara within the North 24 Parganas district. It is claimed that he murdered the college student following a rejection.
Initial findings suggested that Ishita was no longer interested in a relationship with Deshraj. However, the spurned lover allegedly coerced her into continuing the relationship, even sending her a video of himself attempting suicide. When Ishita remained steadfast in her decision, it is suspected that he plotted her murder.
"All these aspects will be explored. He will be brought before a court, and the police will request his custody," stated a senior officer from the Krishnanagar district police.
The investigation revealed that Deshraj contacted his maternal uncle immediately after the crime, who is believed to have aided his escape.
