Kolkata, Feb 7 (NationPress) Voters participating in the significant Assembly elections in West Bengal this year will no longer need to download and print their voters' slips or rely on local political party leaders for assistance before heading to polling stations to cast their votes.

This time, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will personally deliver voters' slips to the homes of eligible voters, following a new directive from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

This decision was made after recommendations from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.

"According to the rules governing electoral processes, it is the responsibility of the BLOs to hand out voters' slips to the electorate. However, this practice has been largely neglected in West Bengal elections since 2011. This time, the Commission aims to revive this practice. It will not only simplify the process for voters but also enhance transparency in the distribution of the voters' list," revealed a source from the CEO's office.

Additionally, if any voters do not receive their slips, they can directly contact their respective BLOs to obtain them.

Meanwhile, the Commission has issued a reminder to West Bengal’s Chief Secretary, Nandini Chakraborty, for the prompt release of pending remuneration for BLOs, BLO supervisors, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.

This marks the third communication from the Commission to the Chief Secretary's office on this matter; the first was sent in August last year, followed by a second in December.

Point of View

I believe this initiative by the Election Commission of India is a significant step towards enhancing voter accessibility and transparency. It reflects a growing understanding of the logistical challenges voters face and demonstrates a commitment to improving the electoral process. Such measures can help bolster voter participation and trust in the democratic system.
