Kolkata, April 9 (NationPress) The Governor of West Bengal, C. V. Ananda Bose, has requested a detailed report from the state government regarding the recent incidents of violence and unrest in Jangipur, located in the Murshidabad district, stemming from protests related to the Waqf Act.
A statement from the officer-on-special-duty (OSD) to the Governor's office expressed strong condemnation of the violence reported in Murshidabad following the passage of the Waqf Bill.
"The situation where vested interests incite chaos is unacceptable and must be addressed decisively," the statement emphasized.
It further noted, "The peaceful observance of Shri Ram Navami festivities highlights the unity of the people of Bengal and the effectiveness of the administration, political entities, the silent majority, media, and all involved parties. Any efforts to disrupt this harmony must be dealt with firmly."
Additionally, the Governor has instructed the state government to take immediate bold action to quell the violence and to "provide a report".
The request for a report followed an appeal from the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to the Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and the District Magistrate of Murshidabad for assistance from the Governor's office and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the affected areas.
Adhikari has criticized the state police for their inability to manage the lawless situation in Jangipur.
In response, the District Magistrate of Murshidabad has issued a notification enforcing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) within the jurisdictions of the Suti and Raghunathganj police stations.
These prohibitory orders prohibit gatherings of five or more individuals, the possession of firearms, sharp objects, and flammable materials, as well as the organization of rallies or processions and the delivery of incendiary speeches.
The prohibitory measures will remain effective until 6 p.m. on Thursday.
