Kolkata, January 7 (NationPress) - A 63-year-old woman tragically lost her life while attending a hearing related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Naihati, located in the North 24 Parganas district, as reported by police on Wednesday.
The woman has been identified as Ratna Chakraborty.
According to her family members, she visited the Barrackpore No. 1 BDO office on Tuesday for the hearing when she suddenly experienced a heart attack.
She began to feel chest pains and was swiftly transported to Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Kalyani, Nadia district, where she was declared dead upon arrival.
The family expressed that the distress caused by the SIR hearing summons contributed to her passing.
The police were notified post-incident; however, no formal complaint has been filed against anyone.
Ratna Chakraborty resided in the Nanna locality of Jetia, within the Naihati Assembly constituency. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Following her husband's demise, she was granted a railway position on compassionate grounds and retired from that role approximately three years ago.
Recently, during the SIR hearing phase, she received a notice from the Election Commission of India stating that her name was absent from the 2002 voter list, which necessitated her appearance at the hearing.
Family sources indicated that she was required to present relevant documents at the hearing. Consequently, Ratna attended the hearing at the BDO office, accompanied by her family.
Shortly after arriving, she reportedly felt unwell. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Abhijit Chakraborty, a relative, shared with local reporters, "Even though her name was missing from the revised 2002 voter list, she had submitted the necessary documentation to the commission. The Election Commission still sent her a hearing notice. Furthermore, her ailing son also received an SIR notice. Although he could not attend, Ratna adhered to the rules and appeared at the hearing center, leading to this unfortunate incident. The anxiety surrounding the SIR process was a significant factor in her death."
In response to the incident, local leaders, including Partha Bhowmick, MP of Barrackpore, and Sanat Dey, MLA of Naihati, visited the hospital to extend their condolences to Ratna's family. The Trinamool leadership offered their support to the grieving family.
