Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 1 (NationPress) A man tragically passed away on Thursday after experiencing a heart attack on December 27, 2025, shortly after attending a hearing related to the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, according to local police.
This unfortunate event occurred in the Swarupnagar area of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.
The deceased has been identified as Sultan Sardar, a 60-year-old local resident. Notably, his name was absent from the 2002 voter list of West Bengal.
Recently summoned to participate in a hearing as part of the ongoing SIR process, Sultan died just four days after his return from this hearing.
The incident unfolded at Swarupda village, within the jurisdiction of the Swarupnagar police station. Family members reported that the elderly man suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Thursday morning.
According to family sources, Sultan had long been a resident of the area but faced issues related to his identity documents and paperwork. His name's absence from the 2002 voter list was particularly concerning. Just five days before the hearing, a notice was delivered to his home, instructing him to appear before officials regarding the SIR process.
On December 27, Sultan attended the Swarupnagar Block Development Office (BDO) for his hearing. Family members alleged that during the meeting, officials informed him of discrepancies in his documents, which caused him significant anxiety.
After returning home, Sultan reportedly experienced severe anxiety, claiming that the stress impacted his health, leading to his eventual heart attack.
After several days of illness, Sultan tragically passed away on Thursday morning.
Sultan’s wife, Dilwara Bibi, shared with local reporters that her husband had been a migrant laborer in 2002 when the previous SIR exercise took place, working in another state at that time. Consequently, while his parents' names were on the 2002 voter list, his was not.
Reflecting on the situation, Dilwara stated, “He attended the BDO office for the hearing on December 27. There, he learned about the discrepancies in his documents. Upon returning home, he was very worried and kept expressing his fears, saying, ‘Where will I go at this age, leaving my children and family behind?’”
Sultan’s son, Osman, expressed his belief that the SIR process instilled fear in his father, stating, “My father died due to the fear of this SIR. This process should be stopped immediately; otherwise, none of us will survive. We will all perish.”
Following Sultan's death, local police were notified. Sources from the police confirmed that the situation is currently under investigation, though no formal complaint has been filed at the Swarupnagar police station as of yet.
