Did a Woman's Fear of SIR Lead to a Tragic End in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 11 (NationPress) A woman in West Bengal’s Hooghly district tragically passed away at SSKM Hospital after ingesting poison, allegedly due to anxiety over not receiving an enumeration form during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in the state, as per police reports.
The woman, named Asha Soren from the Dhaniakhali region, had previously poisoned her six-year-old daughter. Fortunately, the young girl is currently receiving treatment and is anticipated to recover, according to her medical team.
Both Asha and her daughter were admitted to SSKM Hospital for medical assistance.
Family members of Asha reported that she was overwhelmed with fear when the Booth Level Officer (BLO) visited their home for the voter list revision but did not provide her with the required enumeration form.
"She couldn't understand why the rest of the family received their forms while she was left out," a relative explained, detailing the trigger for this heartbreaking decision.
Married in Haripal within the same district about eight years ago, Asha returned to her father's home due to marital issues and had been living there for the last six years.
As the voter list revision process commenced, the BLO delivered forms to her father's household; however, Asha was the only one who did not receive one, leading to her significant distress. Isolated from her in-laws, she felt trapped and hopeless, prompting her to take such drastic actions.
In the aftermath, Dhaniakhali Trinamool Congress MLA Ashima Patra visited the family and informed party general secretary and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. The TMC reported that at least 15 individuals have lost their lives due to anxiety surrounding the SIR.
“Approximately 50% of Dhaniakhali’s population consists of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Many lack essential documentation and live in perpetual fear regarding their future. They don't know where to seek help or how to protect themselves,” Patra stated.
