Bengaluru, April 22 (NationPress) A road rage event involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer has led to the release of the detained biker, Vikas Kumar, a call centre staff, who received station bail from the Byappanahalli police station.
Vikas Kumar’s arrest followed a complaint lodged by Squadron Leader Madhumita Das, spouse of the implicated Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose.
However, after new CCTV footage emerged depicting Shiladitya Bose physically overpowering the biker with punches and kicks, the police decided to release Vikas Kumar on station bail.
In response to the situation, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda remarked on Tuesday that the police findings have disproven the false claims circulating on social media.
“Both a complaint and a counter-complaint have been registered by the police. There was a dispute between the biker and the officer, with the officer’s wife driving the vehicle. During this confrontation, her husband intervened. In one of the complaints, the officer’s wife claimed that the biker attacked her husband and harmed their vehicle,” Dayananda explained.
“In the counter-complaint, the biker asserted that the officer assaulted him multiple times, strangled him, and discarded his keys and mobile phone. The investigation is ongoing, and any necessary arrests will be made,” the Commissioner added.
He also mentioned that the police gathered information from social media regarding the incident and registered the case after reaching out to the Wing Commander’s wife.
When questioned about the Wing Commander interpreting the incident as a language-related issue -- leading to misunderstandings -- the Police Commissioner stated, “Investigations have confirmed that the claims made on social media are inaccurate. Since the matter is still under investigation, further information cannot be shared.”
Meanwhile, a team of Defence officers visited the Byappanahalli police station in Bengaluru to gather more details about the incident.
The Byappanahalli police, who are conducting the investigation, have also visited the scene of the incident and interviewed eyewitnesses. Sources indicated that eyewitnesses informed the police that despite Squadron Leader Madhumita Das urging her husband, Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose, to cease the assault, he disregarded her and continued to brutally attack the biker.
Previously, Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose shared a video on Monday, stating that a terrible incident had occurred while he was on his way to catch a flight to Kolkata. “My father required hospitalization for surgery. My wife Madhumita was driving me around 6:30 a.m. to drop me at the bus stop,” he recounted.
“Out of nowhere, a bike appeared and halted in front of our car. I will be sharing the dash cam footage as well. The biker parked his motorcycle, stood before our vehicle wearing a helmet, holding his keys, and began making comments in Kannada about ‘you DRDO personnel’. Upon noticing my wife at the wheel, he approached my side and initiated an argument,” the officer described.
“Suddenly, he struck me with his keys. I was taken aback. I attempted to exit the car. I pushed him away and, in an effort to vacate the area, I moved his bike aside and returned to the vehicle. Suddenly, he returned with something and began hitting me again. He picked up a stone and attempted to smash my car’s window. He struck me on the head with that same stone,” he asserted.
“What astonished me was the presence of local individuals -- Kannada-speaking elders -- who were observing. Some admonished the biker, saying he was in the wrong and needed to leave. However, many locals supported him. They even held my hand. The biker bit me,” the Wing Commander alleged.
“This is outrageous. I am stronger and more capable; I could have retaliated in any manner. He came prepared, with keys in hand, wearing a helmet, clearly intent on escalating the altercation. I dread to think what might have happened had my wife been alone. I am quite concerned now because my wife and child are left alone in Bengaluru,” he stated.
“This incident took place in the heart of the city, in the DRDO area. I trust the authorities will take the necessary action. I have recorded the vehicle number. I lost many belongings. However, my primary concern remains my wife and child, who are alone in Bengaluru,” he insisted.
In the meantime, Jyothi, the mother of biker Vikas Kumar, expressed on Tuesday that it is unjust for IAF officers to engage in such violent behavior. “It is unacceptable for the officers to physically assault my son. I demand the arrest of the accused,” she declared.
The Bengaluru Police filed an FIR against the IAF officer on Tuesday in relation to the road rage incident involving him and the biker.
This case was documented under the jurisdiction of the Byappanahalli police station. The FIR has been filed against Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose. Earlier, the biker, Vikas Kumar, had been arrested concerning the case. The incident gained attention after Bose shared a video on social media alleging he was attacked by a local youth for not communicating in Kannada.
Nevertheless, subsequent CCTV footage demonstrated Bose overpowering the biker. The FIR has been documented under BNS Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 304 (snatching forcefully), 324 (mischief), and 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace).
