Mumbai, June 17 (NationPress) Following a draw in their inaugural match of the Rugby Premier League (RPL) on Sunday, the Bengaluru Bravehearts made a remarkable comeback, triumphing with a decisive 35-10 victory against the Kalinga Black Tigers, marking their first win in the competition.
Man of the Match and one of India's distinguished talents, Mohit Khatri, shared insights about the atmosphere in the locker room, the unique experience of competing against his brothers, and the profound influence the RPL is poised to have on the rugby landscape in India.
"The initial match ended in a draw, but we are thrilled with the win in our second match. We hope this winning momentum continues. The vibe is fantastic, and the team is uniting well," Mohit expressed after the significant victory.
The RPL is a groundbreaking, franchise-based rugby league that allows top athletes from around the globe to collaborate as teammates. Mohit, a seasoned international player, finds immense value in the opportunity to play alongside esteemed foreign professionals.
"It’s been an incredibly enriching experience. I've gained so much knowledge from the international players in such a brief period; it’s hard to articulate. We are gradually acclimating to what it entails to compete at world-class standards. Each match and every interaction is elevating our game," he remarked.
"The foreign players are remarkably humble. They readily offer advice and support when we seek their guidance, celebrating our small achievements. The overall atmosphere is uplifting and encouraging," Mohit added.
Mohit is not the only Khatri participating in the RPL; his brothers Prince Khatri and Neeraj Khatri are also competing against him, representing the Hyderabad Heroes and the Mumbai Dreamers, respectively. The siblings embarked on their rugby journey together in Haryana, introduced to the sport by their elder brother and former Indian rugby captain, Vikas Khatri.
"In our childhood, we engaged in sports like football and cricket. One day, my elder brother Vikas encouraged us to explore something different—rugby," Mohit reminisced.
"We've always played alongside each other, but now we’re opponents; it feels like exam season. Let’s see how much I’ve absorbed from them over the years," he added.
As this is the inaugural season, the RPL has included a maximum of 30 Indian players in the league. However, Mohit is optimistic that as the league garners popularity, this number will significantly rise in the future.
"Many Indian players have reached out to me. The sport is still on the rise, but this league will be transformative. As RPL’s reputation spreads, more youngsters will find inspiration. Next year, we might see 50 or 60 Indian players. We’ll strive to boost that count," he stated.
Lastly, Mohit extended an invitation to the community, saying, "If there are children in your area or anyone interested in trying a new sport, our game welcomes you all. Come play, watch our league, and support us as much as you can."
The upcoming match on Tuesday will feature the Delhi Redz facing off against the Chennai Bulls. The Delhi Redz are coming off a draw in their opener while the Chennai Bulls have won their last two games.
The second game will see the Hyderabad Heroes challenge the Bengaluru Bravehearts. The Hyderabad Heroes are looking to capitalize on their momentum after a win on opening day, but they face tough competition from the Bengaluru Bravehearts, who have secured a draw and a win so far.
