Budha Amarnath Yatra 2026 flagged off by J&K LG Manoj Sinha in Jammu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday, 17 August 2026, flagged off the Shri Budha Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu, formally commencing the annual 12-day sacred Hindu pilgrimage to the ancient shrine in Poonch district. The first batch of devotees departed amid warm wishes from the Lieutenant Governor for a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey.
The Flag-Off Ceremony
A large gathering attended the flag-off, including eminent spiritual leaders, religious heads, public representatives, senior civil and police administrators, security officials, and devotees. Lieutenant Governor Sinha extended deep appreciation to the Baba Amarnath and Budha Amarnath Yatri Nyas, along with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, local authorities, langar organisations, and civil society groups for their meticulous coordination and comprehensive arrangements ensuring the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage and the Budha Amarnath Ji Mela.
'The sacred journey to Baba Budha Amarnath's abode is a deeply enlightening experience. I firmly believe this pilgrimage brings profound transformation and reveals life's deepest truths to every devotee,' Sinha said at the ceremony.
The Pilgrimage Route and Significance
The Shri Budha Amarnath Yatra covers approximately 230 kilometres, beginning at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu and passing through Rajouri, Sunderbani, Rajpura, and Mandi before culminating at the Budha Amarnath temple in Poonch district, situated at an altitude of 4,600 feet. The shrine is revered for its self-manifested white stone Shivling, and pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip in the adjacent Pulastya River before offering prayers.
Security and Coordination Arrangements
Security and logistical coordination for the yatra are managed jointly by the local administration, security forces, and community organisations, particularly the Baba Amarnath and Budha Amarnath Yatri Nyas. Authorities have put comprehensive arrangements in place to ensure pilgrim safety across the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.
Broader Pilgrimage Season in J&K
The Budha Amarnath Yatra coincides with the broader pilgrimage season in the region. The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra — the larger and more widely known pilgrimage — commenced on 3 July and is scheduled to conclude on 28 August, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and the Raksha Bandhan festival. This convergence of major pilgrimages underscores the deep religious significance of the season for Hindu devotees across India. The Budha Amarnath Yatra, while distinct in its route and scale, draws significant participation from devotees particularly from the Jammu region and beyond.
