Amarnath Yatra 2026: Over 2 lakh pilgrims in 8 days, 6,482 depart Saturday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2026 crossed the two-lakh pilgrim mark within just eight days of its commencement, officials confirmed on 11 July, as a fresh batch of 6,482 yatris departed from Jammu for the Kashmir Valley on Saturday. A total of 2,01,008 pilgrims have now visited the cave shrine since the yatra began.
Fresh Batch Departs Under Tight Security
The latest contingent left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in the early hours of Saturday in a cavalcade of 268 escorted vehicles under strict security arrangements. Of the batch, 2,353 yatris headed to the Baltal base camp while 4,129 proceeded to the Nunwan base camp. The group comprised 4,838 men, 1,387 women, 16 children, 171 sadhus, and 70 sadhvis.
LG Manoj Sinha Hails the Milestone
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha acknowledged the milestone in a post on X, saying: 'In a remarkable testament to faith, the holy Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra has crossed the two lakh pilgrim mark in just 8 days. With the pilgrimage running smoothly on both the routes, the spiritual celebration is set to welcome a steady arrival of devotees in the coming weeks. Har Har Mahadev!' The post underscored the administration's emphasis on smooth operations across both trekking routes.
Record Single-Day Footfall at the Cave Shrine
On 10 July, a single-day total of 29,507 pilgrims paid obeisance at the cave shrine, situated at an altitude of 3,880 metres in the Kashmir Himalayas. Officials noted that devotees travelled from across the country to reach the high-altitude shrine. The pace of arrivals suggests the 57-day yatra — scheduled to conclude on 28 August 2026 coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan — is on track for a strong overall turnout.
Six Pilgrims Injured in Udhampur Road Accident
The milestone was, however, accompanied by a road mishap. On 10 July, six Amarnath pilgrims were injured when their car skidded off the road and struck the hillside at Toldi Nallah National Highway in Udhampur district at approximately 6:10 am. According to reports, the vehicle — bearing registration number MP13ZV-2836 — was carrying residents of Baikunthpur, Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh, en route to the shrine when the driver lost control. The injured — identified as Seema Gupta, Subhash Gupta, Rajeev Gupta, Geeta Gupta, Daleep Kumar, and Anjana Gupta, all from Baikunthpur — were rushed to District Hospital Udhampur, with one subsequently referred to GMC Jammu for further treatment.
What Lies Ahead
With the yatra running smoothly on both the Baltal and Nunwan-Pahalgam routes, authorities anticipate a sustained flow of devotees over the remaining weeks. The administration has kept security and logistics arrangements at heightened readiness. The conclusion of the yatra on 28 August will coincide with two major festivals, making the final days particularly significant for pilgrims nationwide.
