Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in the United States on 25 August to attend the Universal Oneness Celebration, a large Hindu community gathering scheduled for 29 August in New York City. The event, described by organisers as one of the largest and most diverse Hindu community gatherings held in the country, will centre on unity, civic responsibility, and global harmony.

The Event and Its Organisers

The Universal Oneness Celebration is presented by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) Forum, in association with hundreds of cultural, spiritual, service, and interfaith organisations across the United States. The gathering will coincide with the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan, adding a cultural dimension to its civic and spiritual programme.

Photographs released by the organising team showed Bhagwat being received with a traditional welcome ceremony. AHEAD Forum announced his arrival with the phrase drawn from ancient Indian philosophy: 'The world is one family.'

What Bhagwat Is Expected to Say

Bhagwat, who has led the RSS as Sarsanghchalak since March 2009, is set to deliver an address that organisers say is expected to draw attention both in India and the United States. Notably, organisers said he rarely speaks at large public events in America, making this appearance significant. The address is expected to draw on the concept of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' — the ancient Indian idea that the world is one family — as a framework for addressing contemporary challenges through dialogue, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

Who Will Attend

The programme is expected to bring together community leaders, entrepreneurs, physicians, educators, lawyers, artists, elected officials, young leaders, veterans, faith representatives, and volunteers. Delegations are also anticipated from temples, yoga organisations, educational institutions, linguistic and regional associations, cultural groups, and interfaith communities from across the country.

Organisers said the gathering would demonstrate how a pluralistic community can unite around common values while retaining its diversity — a message framed against a broader backdrop of questions surrounding social cohesion, pluralism, and interfaith understanding in the United States.

Background: RSS and Bhagwat

The RSS was founded in Nagpur in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. It operates through a nationwide network of local branches focused on character development, leadership training, disaster relief, rural development, and community service. Bhagwat, a veterinary sciences graduate, previously served as the organisation's General Secretary before succeeding K.S. Sudarshan as the sixth Sarsanghchalak.

The 29 August event will also feature faith-based speakers and cultural presentations. Organisers said the celebration seeks to highlight the growing role of Hindu Americans in public life and their contributions to education, health care, business, public service, philanthropy, and civic engagement. All eyes will be on Bhagwat's address and how its message resonates with the Indian diaspora and American audiences alike.
