Melbourne, Jan 21 (NationPress) India’s Yuki Bhambri and his Swedish teammate Andre Garansson advanced to the second round of the 2026 Australian Open men’s doubles tournament by defeating local wild cards James Duckworth and Cruz Hewitt, the offspring of former World No. 1 and multiple Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, in Melbourne on Wednesday.
The 10th-seeded Indo-Swedish duo secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory in just 57 minutes. In the next round, Bhambri and Garansson will compete against either Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and the Netherlands’ David Pel or the Brazilian team of Marcelo Melo and Fernando Romboli.
From the outset, Bhambri and Garansson showcased their dominance, delivering an almost flawless serving performance. In the first set, they won four out of five service games without dropping a point, only conceding a single point in the ninth game. A crucial break in the eighth game against Duckworth and Hewitt was sufficient to secure the set.
The second set continued in the same vein, with Bhambri and Garansson winning four of their five service games to love. A pivotal break in the seventh game sealed the match in their favor.
Bhambri’s finest performance at the Australian Open occurred in 2014, when he reached the third round alongside New Zealand’s Michael Venus. His most notable achievement at a Grand Slam was last year when the duo made an impressive run to the semi-finals at the US Open.
In the mixed doubles event, Bhambri will partner with the 2018 Wimbledon champion, Nicole Melichar-Martinez from America, facing the sixth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China and Tim Putz from Germany in the opening round on Thursday.
In contrast, another Indian player, Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha, exited in the first round of the men’s doubles competition. Poonacha and his Thai partner Pruchya Isaro lost 7-6(3), 7-5 to Spain's Pedro Martínez and Jaume Munar on Tuesday.
