New York, Sep 4 (NationPress) India's Yuki Bhambri expressed that he faced a tough match after earning his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final berth at the US Open on Thursday.
Bhambri, alongside his men's doubles partner Michael Venus from New Zealand, shocked the 11th seeds Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 during an electrifying quarterfinal encounter on Court 17.
In an interview with JioHotstar, Bhambri shared insights on the match's intensity and the formidable challenge posed by their seasoned rivals. “This has been an extremely nerve-wracking journey, and right now, I'm overwhelmed with emotions. We are truly thankful for overcoming such a tough contest. Our opponents, being seasoned Grand Slam champions, made it incredibly hard for us, pushing us to our limits at every point,” he remarked.
The Indo-Kiwi duo clinched the first set 6-3 after an early break, but a double fault from Bhambri on set point gifted their opponents the second set in a tiebreak. In the final set, Bhambri and Venus broke at 4-3, and despite facing tremendous pressure while serving for the match, they saved five break points and secured victory when Ram’s return hit the net.
Reflecting on his long-standing friendship with Michael Venus, Bhambri noted, “We have been close friends for over 15 years, and it felt like the right moment to start competing together. I'm genuinely happy to be on the court with him. Having faced him as an opponent multiple times, I always preferred to team up with him instead. This journey has been fantastic, starting from the US summer tournament in Washington, and we are thrilled with our progress together.”
Next, Bhambri and Venus will face the sixth-seeded British duo of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski for a chance to reach the final, as they aim to continue their fairytale run.
