Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on 29 August voiced deep anguish over the catastrophic floods in Nepal, calling the scale of destruction “unbearable to watch” and appealing for divine intervention in a heartfelt blog post.

Writing on his personal blog, Bachchan reflected on the helplessness that nature’s fury can inspire. “On a more serious note the devastation of the floods in Nepal are unbearable to watch… the fury of nature can never be battled with .. its respect needs the presence of the divine…we pray .. for that in itself is beyond all…(sic),” he wrote.

The actor did not stop at grief alone — his post was also a call to prayer, underscoring the limits of human agency in the face of natural calamity.

Scale of the Nepal Disaster

The floods struck Nepal on 26 August, triggering catastrophic flash floods across multiple regions. According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the bodies of 579 people swept away by the floodwaters had been recovered as of the latest count. A further 1,924 people remained out of contact as of Friday evening, according to official figures. The scale of missing persons signals that the final toll could rise significantly.

This comes amid a broader pattern of increasingly severe monsoon flooding across South Asia, with Nepal’s mountain terrain making it particularly vulnerable to flash floods and landslides each year.

Raksha Bandhan Post

Alongside his flood tribute, Bachchan also shared a photograph of his wrist adorned with rakhis on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. He wrote: “…may this bond of love, affection and care live eternally — the dedication of the relation between a sister and a brother, never to be broken or forgotten… its sacred thread tied to the wrist, is the symbol of perpetuity in the relationship… its auspicious presence fortifies its reason…”

What Bachchan Is Working On

On the professional front, the octogenarian actor is currently engaged with the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin. The epic mythological science-fiction franchise also features Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. The first instalment, set in a dystopian Kashi of 2898 AD, followed a group protecting a lab subject’s unborn child believed to be Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu.

He will reportedly also appear in Nitesh Tiwary’s ambitious Ramayana: Part 1, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, and Sunny Deol. According to reports, Bachchan is set to portray the character of Jatayu. He was last seen on screen in the action thriller Vettaiyan, directed by T. J. Gnanavel.
