Is the BJD Right to Criticize the Odisha Government over Paddy Procurement and Law & Order?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 25 (NationPress) The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticized the state government for its poor handling of paddy procurement and the worsening law and order conditions in Odisha, declaring plans for statewide protests from February 2 to 17.
At a press conference at Sankha Bhavan, the BJD's senior deputy chairperson Devi Prasad Mishra accused the government of deceiving farmers regarding seed distribution. He stated, “Following the harvest of paddy, the government is failing to implement an effective procurement system, leaving farmers in distress.”
Mishra further noted that since the BJP took office, the law and order situation has severely declined. Prasanna Acharya, the party's farmers' cell convener and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, claimed that for the first time, the paddy procurement system in Odisha is facing a complete breakdown.
“Out of 19,66,181 farmers registered this year, only 29 percent have managed to procure a mere 25 lakh metric tons out of the aimed 73 lakh metric tons—just 34 percent of the target. This is a clear indication of the government's gross failure,” Acharya asserted.
He emphasized that while Rabi paddy cultivation has commenced in irrigated regions, Kharif paddy procurement remains incomplete. The government has announced that procurement will extend until March. Acharya warned that further delays could hinder farmers’ ability to secure funds for Rabi paddy cultivation. He highlighted that despite being smaller and yielding less, Chhattisgarh has already procured 1.26 lakh metric tons against its 80-lakh-ton target, showcasing the inadequacies of the Odisha government’s procurement process.
Moreover, senior BJD leader Arun Kumar Sahu claimed that Odisha’s law and order is in turmoil, with over 40,000 women suffering various forms of violence. He pointed out that increasing communal tensions threaten the state’s longstanding peace.
“Thus, as directed by the president of BJD, the party has resolved to conduct protests in each district from February 2 to 17, culminating in a major rally in Bhubaneswar on February 24,” Sahu stated.
