Bhubaneswar, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the main opposition party, has strongly condemned the state government for what they describe as a total disregard for the agricultural community over the last year.
During a press conference on Friday, BJD representatives claimed that the government has failed to honor its commitments to farmers. They accused the ruling party of undermining the wellbeing of the farming sector.
The BJD asserted that the agriculture sector's growth rate has plummeted - dropping from 7.6 percent in 2023-24 to 3.8 percent in 2024-25. They also pointed out significant reductions in the agricultural budget by the Central government, highlighting a decrease in Odisha's allocation from Rs 21,011 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 17,089 crore in 2024-25.
Concerns were particularly raised regarding the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), with Odisha's funding under the scheme dropping dramatically from Rs 146 crore in 2023-24 to just Rs 32 crore in 2024-25.
The party also pointed to the increasing anxiety among farmers related to paddy procurement.
BJD leaders mentioned that the government's new registration policy requires farmers to present legal heir certificates—a strategy they believe is designed to alleviate the burden of the additional Rs 800 per quintal support currently offered.
“Farmers are being compelled to engage in distress sales as the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is failing to collect paddy promptly. Unseasonal rains have exacerbated the situation, and payments are often delayed beyond the promised 48 hours,” the party claimed.
To escalate their protests, the BJD declared the organization of ‘Krushak Samabesh’ (farmers' gathering) across multiple districts.
The first protest will occur in Bargarh on August 18, where farmer leaders and cultivators will unite to express their discontent with the government's policies.
The party reiterated its commitment to advocating for farmers' issues until the government takes remedial measures.
