Bhubaneswar, Aug 18 (NationPress) Prominent leaders of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) have criticized the Odisha government and the BJP-led Central administration for their inadequate response to the ongoing farmer protests in Bargarh, claiming severe neglect of agricultural concerns and accusing the Election Commission of political favoritism.
During a press conference, veteran BJD member Prasanna Acharya condemned the alleged indifference of the government towards farmers who are compelled to protest for their rightful entitlements.
“Those who sustain the nation should not have to struggle for their fundamental rights. Both state and central administrations are ignoring their plight,” Acharya stated.
He enumerated several urgent issues highlighted by the protesting farmers, including: simplifying the procurement registration process, ensuring timely fertilizer supply, combating black marketing, prompt paddy lifting from procurement centers, timely payments to farmers, and putting an end to arbitrary deductions in grading and sorting that, according to him, rob farmers of necessary subsidies.
Acharya also questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission, asserting that the constitutional body is acting more like a political instrument than an independent entity.
“It is regrettable that the Commission seems to function as a representative of a political party. This raises significant doubts about its neutrality,” he added.
Supporting Acharya's views, senior BJD leader and former minister Pratap Jena expressed unwavering backing for the farmers' protests in Bargarh and launched a fierce criticism of the 'double-engine government,' accusing it of failing the agricultural sector in the state.
“Under the leadership of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, farmers' welfare was always a priority. Odisha was the first state to establish a separate agriculture budget, initiate major reforms, and has received the prestigious Krishi Karman Award five times,” Jena highlighted.
He claimed that over the past 14 months, farmers have experienced persistent neglect. New registration protocols have caused confusion and delays in procurement, he asserted.
Despite the BJP’s pledge of ‘No cut, no deduction,’ deductions persist, and payments remain overdue, he contended.
There is a critical shortage of fertilizers, rampant black marketing, and farmers are receiving inferior quality seeds, further jeopardizing productivity, he claimed.
Jena also disclosed that the BJD has presented a memorandum to the President of India, requesting immediate intervention to safeguard the rights of farmers in Odisha.
“This transcends mere political concerns. It revolves around justice for the individuals who support our nation. Until their grievances are addressed, our protest will persist,” he affirmed.
Regarding the nomination of C.P. Radhakrishnan as the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate, Jena stated that it is an internal BJP matter, adding that “the struggles of Odisha’s farmers are a considerably more urgent issue for the BJD.”
He also rejected claims of voter list manipulation and alleged 'vote theft' as political diversions. “Political parties should cease misleading the public and concentrate on genuine issues — such as the deteriorating situation of our farmers,” he concluded.
