New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) In the midst of a growing political storm regarding the Election Commission's current voter verification initiative in Bihar, senior BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain vehemently denied the Opposition's accusations that the revision of the voters list is intended to target the minority community.
He dismissed these allegations as politically motivated and irresponsible fearmongering, asserting that the voter verification campaign is a normal electoral procedure and not a conspiracy.
“Those who are fostering confusion regarding voter verification are acting irresponsibly. Voter verification is a standard process that always occurs prior to elections... This is a procedural measure, but some individuals are propagating a false narrative that Muslim votes are being deliberately purged,” Hussain stated.
“As a native of Bihar, having served as a Member of Parliament thrice and as a minister in both state and central governments, I can attest that not a single Muslim has approached me claiming their vote is being erased. These individuals are merely fantasizing about the reduction of Muslim votes. With no substantive issues to discuss, they are attempting to instill fear within the Muslim community. It’s quite unfortunate,” he added.
The dispute originates from the Election Commission's announcement of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. This revision aims to ensure that only eligible citizens are included in the voter lists, as mandated by the Constitution.
On July 3, representatives from 11 parties within the INDIA bloc convened with Election Commission officials, expressing concerns that over two crore voters in Bihar might face disenfranchisement due to an inability to provide required documents in a timely manner. However, the Election Commission clarified that voters can submit documents at any time before July 25, and even those who miss this deadline will have another opportunity during the claims and objections period.
In a statement issued on July 6, the Election Commission emphasized that 77,895 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are conducting door-to-door visits to assist voters in completing and submitting enumeration forms.
The Commission reiterated that the goal of the revision is to eradicate duplicate, outdated, or ineligible entries, such as individuals who have relocated, passed away, or are registered in multiple locations, rather than targeting any specific community.
Additionally, Hussain criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of using an isolated crime incident in Patna to tarnish the reputation of the entire state of Bihar.
“Nitish Kumar has never compromised with crime or criminals. One unfortunate incident in Patna does not warrant defaming the entire state. Rahul Gandhi should apologize for his remarks. Bihar is currently experiencing good governance under Nitish Kumar’s leadership. Investors are arriving, jobs are being generated, and residents feel safe even at night. One exception cannot define the rule.”
