New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) As the nation commemorates the 135th birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the principal architect of India’s Constitution, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of the Congress party and its former administrations. They accuse the Congress of not only belittling his contributions to the nation but also plotting to erase his legacy.
On Monday, the BJP unveiled two dramatized videos that reenact the political events of that time, illustrating how Dr. Ambedkar endured a series of 'ignominies and humiliations' under the leadership of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The videos assert that Baba Saheb was compelled to resign from Nehru's cabinet due to his criticism of the government and his advocacy for the rights of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
In his resignation speech in Parliament, Dr. Ambedkar launched a scathing critique of Nehru's administration, questioning, “Are only Muslims entitled to special privileges? Why shouldn’t the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes receive the same level of protections? I cannot be part of such a government,” as depicted in the video.
Another significant moment was when Nehru himself campaigned against Dr. Ambedkar, showcasing how the Bharat Ratna was 'dishonored and derided' by the Congress. The theatrical representations in the video suggest that a former aide of Bala Saheb was allegedly supported by Nehru to challenge and defeat him in the elections.
During the first Lok Sabha elections in 1951–52, Dr. B R Ambedkar contested from the Mumbai North Central constituency as a candidate for the Scheduled Castes Federation. He lost to Congress candidate Narayan Sadoba Kajrolkar, who had been his personal assistant, by a margin of around 15,000 votes. Nehru's active campaign against Dr. Ambedkar turned the election into a matter of prestige, ensuring his defeat.
After this electoral setback, Babasaheb ran in the Bhandara by-election in Maharashtra in 1954, only to be defeated again, this time by Congress candidate Bhaurao Borkar, with a margin of about 8,500 votes.
The BJP asserts that the Nehru government and the Congress party intentionally sought to undermine Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions, ensuring his political marginalization and electoral losses.
“The citizens of this country will never forget the insult and affront suffered by the architect of the Constitution,” they stated.
