New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) As the political climate heats up over the Election Commission’s current voter verification initiative in Bihar, senior BJP figure Shahnawaz Hussain vehemently dismissed the Opposition's claims that this revision of the voter list is designed to undermine the minority community. Labeling these assertions as politically charged and “irresponsible fearmongering,” Hussain emphasized that the voter verification initiative is a routine electoral process, not a scheme against any group.
“Those who are instigating fear regarding voter verification are misguiding the public. Voter verification is a customary procedure that occurs prior to elections... This is a procedural requirement, yet some individuals are peddling the misleading narrative that Muslim votes are being intentionally erased,” Hussain stated.
“Having been a Member of Parliament thrice and a minister in both state and central governments, not a single Muslim has approached me expressing concerns about their vote being deleted. These individuals are indulging in fantasies that Muslim votes will be reduced. With no substantial issues to address, they are attempting to instill fear within the Muslim community. This is truly unfortunate,” he added.
The uproar follows the Election Commission’s announcement of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, aimed at ensuring that only qualified citizens are included on the voter lists, a process mandated by the Constitution.
On July 3, 11 parties from the INDIA coalition met with EC officials, alleging that over two crore voters in Bihar could be disenfranchised due to failing to provide the necessary documentation in time. However, the EC clarified that voters can submit documents up until July 25, and even those who miss the deadline will have another opportunity during the claims and objections phase.
In its statement on July 6, the EC reaffirmed that 77,895 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are conducting door-to-door visits, assisting voters with filling out and submitting enumeration forms.
The EC also reiterated that the aim of the revision is to remove duplicate, outdated, or ineligible entries, such as individuals who have relocated, passed away, or are registered in multiple locations, rather than targeting any specific community.
Hussain also criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of exploiting an isolated crime incident in Patna to tarnish the reputation of the entire state of Bihar.
“Nitish Kumar has never compromised with crime or criminals. While one incident in Patna is regrettable, using it to defame the entire state is grossly irresponsible. Rahul Gandhi should retract his comments. Bihar is currently experiencing effective governance under Nitish Kumar, with investments flowing in, jobs being created, and people feeling secure even at night. One anomaly should not define the norm.”
