Karnataka BJP MLA Chandru Lamani Receives Conditional Bail in Bribery Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 11 (NationPress) BJP MLA Chandru Lamani, who serves the Shirahatti Assembly in the Gadag district, has been granted conditional bail by the Special Court for People’s Representatives in Bengaluru on Wednesday amidst an alleged bribery scandal.
The court issued bail on the stipulation that Lamani secure a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and provide two sureties. This decision marks a significant relief for the legislator, who had been in judicial custody at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison for the last 15 days.
Lamani's arrest occurred on February 21 when the Karnataka Lokayukta Police allegedly caught him accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a contractor in Laxmeshwar, located in the Gadag district.
The Lokayukta reported that the operation was executed by the Gadag unit under Section 7(a) and Section 7(A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials indicated that Lamani was detained while purportedly accepting the money as part of a broader bribe solicitation.
According to Lokayukta officials, Lamani had allegedly requested Rs 11 lakh from a Class One contractor, identified as Vijay Poojar, related to a contract under the Minor Irrigation Department. The alleged bribe was associated with the construction of retaining walls along a stretch of road.
During the sting operation, Lamani's government personal assistant, Manjunath Valmiki, and his private assistant, Guru Lamani, were also taken into custody for questioning.
The trap was orchestrated under the leadership of Dharwad Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Siddalingappa. Following the arrest, officials also conducted a search at Balaji Hospital in Laxmeshwar, which is owned by the MLA.
This incident has been perceived as a setback for the BJP, which has been accusing the Congress-led government in Karnataka of soliciting commissions from contractors and delaying payments.
BJP representatives claim that the district-in-charge minister and Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil, along with other Congress leaders like Krishnagouda Patil, are involved in a conspiracy to have Dr. Lamani arrested.
BJP MP and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai also suspects a conspiracy against MLA Lamani, urging a comprehensive investigation into the matter. He emphasized that under the Prevention of Corruption Act, coercing someone to accept a bribe is itself an offence and warrants thorough examination.
