This incident marks a significant blow to the BJP, which has accused the Congress-led government in the state of demanding bribes and commissions from contractors, while failing to disburse payments.

The Karnataka Lokayukta confirmed that a successful operation was executed by the Gadag Lokayukta Police under Section 7 (a) in conjunction with 7 (A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The accused is currently in custody, with investigations ongoing, the Lokayukta reported.

During the operation, BJP MLA Lamani was allegedly found accepting Rs 5 lakh from a contractor, part of a larger bribe request.

His personal assistant, Manjunath Valmiki, and private assistant, Guru Lamani, were also detained for questioning as part of the operation, according to the official statement.

The Karnataka Lokayukta indicated that MLA Chandru Lamani had purportedly requested Rs 11 lakh from a Class One contractor named Vijay Poojar concerning a contract for work assigned by the Minor Irrigation Department.

The bribe was reportedly connected to the construction of roadside retaining walls, as stated by Lokayukta officials.

The operation was conducted under the direction of Dharwad Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Siddalingappa.

Authorities set a trap and apprehended MLA Lamani and his aides while they were allegedly accepting Rs 5 lakh as part of the supposed arrangement.

After the operation, Lokayukta officials searched the Balaji Hospital in Laxmeshwar, owned by MLA Chandru Lamani.

Further inquiries into the matter are ongoing, with additional details yet to be disclosed.

Madal Virupakshappa, a former Karnataka BJP MLA, was previously arrested in a bribery case in 2023.

The Lokayukta Police had located BJP MLA Virupakshappa in Channagiri town of Davanagere district, where he was to participate in a public meeting.

Virupakshappa reportedly evaded law enforcement before being intercepted at a toll gate near Bengaluru.

His anticipatory bail was denied by the Karnataka High Court.

Virupakshappa was identified as the primary suspect in a bribery scandal involving the Karnataka State Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL).

He was implicated in a corruption case filed by the Karnataka Lokayukta after his son was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh.

Subsequent raids revealed Rs 6.1 crore in cash at his residence in Sanjay Nagar and Rs 2.2 crore at his office.

In total, authorities uncovered Rs 8.23 crore in cash, a significant amount of gold and silver ornaments, and substantial land investments across Karnataka.
