Bengaluru, July 14 (NationPress) Karnataka Minister for RDPR, IT, and BT, Priyank Kharge, on Monday vehemently criticized the BJP following the arrest of his close associate Lingaraj Kanni by Maharashtra Police on drug peddling allegations. He emphasized that the Congress has promptly taken disciplinary measures and challenged the BJP to demonstrate similar accountability for its own compromised leaders.
The detained Lingaraj Kanni, who serves as the president of the Kalaburagi South Block Congress Unit, is recognized for his close ties with both Priyank Kharge and Congress MLA Allamaprabhu Patil.
Kanni was apprehended by the Thane Police in Maharashtra’s Thane city while allegedly attempting to distribute narcotic substances. Authorities reported he was caught with 120 bottles of prohibited Codeine-based syrup valued at around Rs 27,000. A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Bazarpeth Police Station, and further investigations are ongoing.
In an interview with IANS, Priyank Kharge defended the position of the Congress by stating: “The BJP can pursue whatever path they choose. We are a party that respects the law. As soon as we received this information, we took immediate action and suspended him. Whether it involves Rs 27,000 or Rs 27 crore, the amount is irrelevant—we acted decisively.”
He urged the BJP to exhibit similar integrity, declaring: “In the same vein, let the BJP prove their courage by suspending their MLAs accused of serious crimes such as rape, atrocities against SCs and STs, or violations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They should address their internal issues before casting aspersions on us. Our party has a strict no-tolerance policy for any lawbreakers.”
Kharge also criticized the BJP’s selective outrage, highlighting their silence regarding allegations against coalition partners.
“What about those from North Kannada or South Kannada? Numerous videos have surfaced concerning their ally, Janata Dal (Secular). Have they spoken even once about the Prajwal Revanna case? At least we possess the courage to act when necessary,” he remarked.
Responding to personal attacks, Kharge stated: “According to the BJP, whatever occurs in Karnataka is my responsibility. They lack substantial issues to discuss, so they’re trying to escalate this matter. It’s a minor issue worth Rs 27,000. He violated the law, and we took appropriate action.”
Meanwhile, police sources confirmed that Kanni joined the Congress during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections after having previously been affiliated with the BJP.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case, with more information anticipated in the upcoming days.
