Kolkata, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Mamata Banerjee administration has initiated a special relief fund aimed at collecting public donations for the flood and landslide-stricken areas of North Bengal. However, the BJP has raised concerns regarding the underlying motives behind this decision.
This marks the second instance the state government has established a relief fund, the first being during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Notably, this new fund allows the government to allocate the donations for future disasters across the state, not solely for North Bengal.
The establishment of this relief fund has led to scrutiny over the financial state of West Bengal, with critics suggesting that the government is being compelled to solicit public contributions for urgent services. Sukanta Majumdar, former BJP state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State for Education, expressed skepticism about the necessity of this fund, questioning the utilization of the Central share from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) in the past five years.
“In the last five years, the Central contribution to the SDRF has amounted to approximately Rs 5,000 crore, with the Union government providing a 75 percent share. Where is that money now?” Majumdar questioned during a media briefing before his departure to New Delhi.
While visiting the flood-affected regions, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee repeatedly asserted that the Union government failed to offer adequate support for rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
In response, Amit Malviya, BJP’s Information Technology Cell Chief and central observer for West Bengal, refuted the Chief Minister's claims, stating that the Union government has been actively involved in coordinating relief operations, providing financial aid, and sending teams for rescue and recovery. He emphasized that the West Bengal administration appears to be unresponsive.
“Instead of politicizing the suffering of the populace, Mamata Banerjee should prioritize governance over grievances,” Malviya remarked last week.
