Did Varanasi Demolition of Temples Mislead the Nation for Political Gains?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) The BJP on Tuesday rebutted assertions made by Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav regarding the alleged demolition of temples in Varanasi. The party released three fact-checks aimed at countering what they deem to be misleading claims that leverage AI for political motives.
Amit Malviya, the head of BJP's National Information and Technology Department, posted on X, stating, “In yet another attempt to mislead the nation for political gain, the Opposition is disseminating false information about damage to temples and idols in Kashi, utilizing fake and AI-generated visuals that are circulating online.”
“The actual situation is completely different. This report aims to debunk the misinformation and clarify the facts,” he said, sharing a compilation of the false assertions and the corresponding factual realities.
Malviya outlined the following: “False Claim 1: A temple was demolished for a hotel. FACT: The hotel is being built on the site of a hospital that closed in 2010.”
“False Claim 2: Temples and idols were harmed. FACT: No damage has been identified to any temple or idol,” the BJP leader remarked.
He noted, “False Claim 3: The idol of Ahilyabai was destroyed. FACT: The Ahilyabai artwork has been successfully restored.”
The BJP's robust rebuttal comes in response to SP president Akhilesh Yadav's accusations against the Uttar Pradesh government, amidst rising controversy over allegations that temples and statues were dismantled during road-widening efforts in Varanasi’s Dal Mandi area, near Manikarnika Ghat.
In a veiled post in Hindi on social media, Yadav commented, “Heritages are strung together like pearls; they are not demolished, they are cherished.”
The former chief minister shared images that allegedly depict statues before and after the redevelopment activities. In one post, he remarked, “Ahilyabai statue among debris.”
Yadav’s comments followed a political offensive against the BJP regarding the Dal Mandi redevelopment initiative. On Friday, the SP chief accused the ruling party of targeting small merchants and residents in the locality.
