Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national General Secretary Satish Poonia on Monday declared that the party will contest all 117 Assembly seats in Punjab independently, ruling out any pre-poll alliance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Speaking at his first media interaction after being appointed the party's organisational in-charge for Punjab, Poonia said strengthening the BJP's grassroots structure is his primary mandate.

Poonia's Mandate for Punjab

Poonia outlined an immediate agenda centred on understanding the organisation from the inside. He said his initial programme would include meetings with the BJP core committee, office-bearers, district presidents and district in-charges. His broader objective is to review the party's functioning and build its presence from the booth level to the state level — a ground-up approach the BJP has deployed successfully in other states ahead of assembly cycles.

He also confirmed that the party's Seva Sankalp Abhiyan would run from 17 September to 17 October across the country, including Punjab. Poonia clarified that the campaign, which coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, would go beyond a celebratory exercise and focus on social service and public welfare outreach.

Alliance Question Put to Rest

Poonia was unequivocal on the alliance question, stating he was carrying a direct message from the central leadership. 'I am the ambassador of the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its clear message is that we will contest all 117 seats on our own strength. A meeting does not mean an alliance. In a democracy, people and political leaders can meet the Prime Minister to discuss various issues. It should not be interpreted as an indication of any political understanding,' he said.

The clarification appears aimed at dampening speculation that recent meetings between political leaders and the Prime Minister signal a possible coalition arrangement in Punjab. Poonia's remarks represent the BJP's firmest public statement yet on its standalone strategy for the state.

Cadre-First Approach for Mission Punjab 2027

Poonia underscored that the BJP's organisational strength rests on its workers, not just its leadership. He acknowledged the structural tension between the large number of committed workers and the limited number of organisational positions and election tickets, but said the party has consistently worked to recognise those who remain continuously engaged. 'The organisation certainly recognises those who remain continuously connected with the party and work with commitment,' he said.

He appealed to party workers to maintain discipline and channel their views through internal organisational frameworks. Collective effort, he said, would be essential to achieving what the party is calling Mission Punjab 2027.

Next Steps: Jalandhar Meetings and Roadmap

In the coming days, Poonia said he would hold detailed organisational meetings in Jalandhar with state office-bearers, district presidents and district in-charges. The party plans to systematically review its organisational health, deepen its grassroots presence and prepare a comprehensive electoral roadmap for the 2027 polls. With the elections roughly 18 months away, the BJP's early mobilisation signals a long-runway strategy for a state where it has historically struggled to convert support into seats.
