BJP emerging as Punjab alternative, says new In-charge Satish Poonia
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Newly appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab In-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia on Tuesday, 18 August drew a direct parallel between the BJP's current standing in Punjab and the position the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) occupied just before its landslide victory in the state in 2022, asserting that the BJP is now 'emerging as an alternative' for voters there. The remarks came shortly after Poonia's appointment as the party's Punjab In-charge under newly elected party chief Nitin Nabin.
Poonia on His New Role
Expressing gratitude for the appointment, Poonia described it as 'a big thing' for an ordinary party worker to be entrusted with the responsibilities of National General Secretary and Punjab In-charge simultaneously. He framed the opportunity as a reflection of the BJP's culture of rewarding grassroots workers with leadership roles.
BJP's Record of Breaking Political Strongholds
Poonia cited several states as evidence of the BJP's ability to expand into territories where it previously lacked a foothold. 'The party came into power for the first time in West Bengal, defeated the AAP to reclaim Delhi after many years, also returned to power in Maharashtra and achieved a good mandate to remain in power in Bihar,' he said. He also referenced Tripura as a model of the party breaking political stereotypes in states where it had no established base.
Anti-Incumbency Against AAP, Turmoil in Congress
Poonia claimed there is an 'undercurrent in favour of the BJP' in Punjab and that 'anti-incumbency is clearly visible' against the ruling AAP government. He also took aim at the principal opposition, saying there is 'turmoil within the Congress,' leaving voters with no credible alternative — a gap he argued the BJP is positioned to fill. 'People are fed up of the AAP government... People want peace and brotherhood to prevail in the state and the BJP is fully capable to provide that faith,' he said, adding that a 'double-engine government in Punjab will mean better coordination with the Centre.'
Challenges Ahead of Punjab Polls
Acknowledging the road ahead is not straightforward, Poonia identified two primary obstacles: contesting against an incumbent party in power, and dismantling the entrenched organisational network of the Congress, which has deep historical roots in Punjab. He argued, however, that voters in Punjab have observed the BJP's governance record in neighbouring states — Rajasthan, Haryana — and are drawing their own conclusions.
State Leadership Welcomes the Appointment
Punjab BJP Vice-President Fatehjung Singh Bajwa welcomed the new leadership, expressing confidence that Punjab would play a significant role under the restructured party team. 'Satish Poonia ji is a seasoned senior leader who understands the state well. I think his appointment is a very good decision as he has a good political understanding and experience,' Bajwa said. The next Punjab assembly elections are due in 2027, giving the party roughly two years to consolidate its presence in a state it has not governed in decades.
