Why is BJP Criticizing Mamata Banerjee Over SIR?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fierce criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government concerning its opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative in West Bengal. The BJP accused the state government of fabricating a false narrative about the voter verification process, which is essential for the public and national welfare.
During a press briefing at the BJP headquarters, Lok Sabha member Sambit Patra extensively referenced the Chief Justice of India's remarks regarding the SIR, intensifying his assault on the Mamata-led administration and labeling it a significant defeat for the Trinamool Congress and its leader.
Patra pointed out that both the Congress and the Trinamool have previously attempted to mislead voters with fabricated claims, such as “SIR is illegal and a political strategy to advantage the ruling BJP.” He noted that these unfounded assertions were thoroughly dismantled by the Supreme Court during hearings on Mamata Banerjee's petition on Monday.
“Mamata Banerjee herself approached the Supreme Court as a petitioner, arguing against the SIR initiative and requesting the court to annul the entire operation. She alleged that government appointments related to SIR were unlawful and sought to terminate the entire process, but all her claims were rejected,” Patra stated.
Referring to the Supreme Court's statements as a significant blow to the Mamata administration, Patra quoted the CJI, “We will issue any necessary orders and clarifications, but we cannot permit any obstructions to the SIR. All states must comprehend this.”
He added that the West Bengal government had protested against the appointment of micro-observers, refusing to utilize personnel from the state government for the SIR initiative. However, following a reprimand from the court, the administration is now facilitating this process.
Post the Supreme Court's remarks, approximately 8,505 Group-B officers are expected to report to the District Magistrate and commence their duties by this evening, he emphasized.
The BJP MP also informed the press that the Election Commission has been empowered by the Supreme Court to take action against any official found to be acting under political influence.
Patra highlighted the show-cause notice issued to the West Bengal DGP, calling it a direct condemnation of the Chief Minister. He remarked, “The Bengal DGP has been show-caused and required to submit a personal affidavit regarding his incompetence and failure to prevent violence. This reflects poorly on the Chief Minister, as the DGP operates under her authority.”
