What Happened on Day One of the SIR Revision Exercise in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 4 (NationPress) As the Special Intensive Revision exercise commences in West Bengal under the Election Commission of India (ECI) starting Tuesday, both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP are set to conduct rallies centered around the SIR theme.
The Trinamool Congress rally in Kolkata, opposing the SIR, will be spearheaded by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. This rally is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. from the statue of B.R. Ambedkar located at Red Road in central Kolkata, concluding at the historic residence of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in Jorasanko, North Kolkata.
The rally will emphasize two key demands: ensuring that no legitimate voter’s name is removed from the electoral list after the SIR, and urging the BJP to cease instilling fear in the state concerning SIR, which has allegedly led to incidents of suicide and suicide attempts.
Conversely, the BJP rally, led by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, will occur in Panihati, located in the North 24 Parganas district.
Notably, a tragic event occurred last week when Pradeep Kar, a 57-year-old resident of Panihati, reportedly took his own life out of fear linked to the NRC. The Trinamool Congress had previously held a rally addressing this issue in Panihati last week, and the BJP has since announced a counter-rally.
The BJP’s Panihati rally aims to counter allegations that the Trinamool Congress is misrepresenting the SIR by incorrectly associating it with the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Suvendu Adhikari is expected to address how the Trinamool Congress is politicizing the SIR issue by linking any suicide or suicide attempt to SIR or NRC.
Since the onset, the Trinamool Congress has been staunchly opposing the SIR, asserting that it is a scheme orchestrated by the BJP and the central government to impose the NRC in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the BJP claims that the Trinamool Congress fears the SIR because it may lead to the removal of names associated with their voter base of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants from the electoral rolls.
