Kolkata, Oct 29 (NationPress) Heightening his political rhetoric against the BJP-led Union government, Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee, on Wednesday, urged citizens to hold local BJP leaders accountable if they demand their parents' birth certificates during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) related to West Bengal's electoral rolls or for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) verification.
Banerjee's remarks followed his visit to the family of 57-year-old Pradeep Kar, who reportedly took his own life in Panihati, North 24 Parganas district due to anxiety over the impending SIR and alleged NRC procedures.
The Trinamool leader also declared that a rally would take place in Panihati on Thursday to seek justice for Pradeep Kar.
He accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of fostering a climate of fear among the state's residents and demanded legal action against them.
"Pradeep Kar succumbed to the stress caused by the NRC and the SIR. An FIR must be lodged against Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar. Are they capable of producing the documents they demand from ordinary individuals?" Banerjee questioned.
During his visit to Kar's home, Banerjee was joined by party leaders Partha Bhowmick, Nirmal Ghosh, and Debraj Chakraborty.
After his visit, the Trinamool Congress leader stated, "Next time local BJP representatives approach your neighborhood, challenge them for their parents' certificates. Tie them to a tree or lamp post until they provide their parents' and grandparents' documentation," he declared.
Banerjee further stated, "We do not endorse violence. Do not harm them (BJP leaders); simply restrain them if they request your parents' birth certificates."
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of instilling fear and manipulating the NRC under the guise of conducting SIR.
