Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 2 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, General Secretary and MP of Trinamool Congress, announced on Friday that the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is scheduled to meet the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, in New Delhi to express her concerns regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state.
During a significant political rally at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas on Friday afternoon, he stated, "I met the Chief Election Commissioner earlier this week, where he made gestures towards me. I firmly reminded him that while he is appointed, I am elected. I ensured he understands the spirit of a Bengali. Now, Mamata Banerjee will take the matter further."
At the rally, he introduced three individuals from South 24 Parganas – Manirul Molla, Harekrishna Giri, and Maya Das – who were reportedly listed as "deceased voters" in the draft voters' list published on December 16, 2025.
This event marked Abhishek Banerjee's inaugural political rally of the year, leading up to the crucial Assembly elections set for this year.
Sources from Trinamool Congress indicated that he plans to conduct similar rallies in the days leading up to the elections.
During his address in Baruipur, he asserted that in the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress aims to secure at least one additional seat compared to the 2021 elections.
"That additional seat must come from South 24 Parganas. In 2021, Trinamool Congress triumphed in 30 out of 31 constituencies in South 24 Parganas. Our only loss was in Bhangar, but this time we must claim victory there at all costs," Abhishek Banerjee emphasized.
Currently, Naushad Siddiqui is the only All India Secular Front (AISF) representative from Bhangar in the West Bengal Assembly.
In his speech, he also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for meddling in personal freedoms.
"They aim to dictate personal preferences, from dietary choices to clothing. They mislabel the Bengali culture as Bangladeshi culture. However, as long as Mamata Banerjee remains at the helm, their attempts will not prevail in West Bengal. The outcome will be no different in 2026," he concluded.
