Kolkata, Dec 1 (NationPress) The national general secretary of Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, expressed sharp criticism towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. Modi's remarks, which suggested that the Opposition should concentrate on performance rather than engaging in 'drama' in Parliament, were seen by Banerjee as an attempt by the Centre to avoid accountability regarding the reported deaths of 40 individuals in West Bengal connected to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative.
While inaugurating the 'Sebaashray 2' health camp in the Maheshtala region of South 24 Parganas, Banerjee insisted that calling for a parliamentary discussion on the SIR was not mere 'drama.'
“Is it drama to demand a debate on the SIR? If speaking out for the people is considered drama, the electorate will respond in the upcoming elections,” Banerjee stated.
“Approximately 40 individuals, including Booth Level Officers (BLOs), have lost their lives as a result of the SIR being implemented in the state without proper consultation. The BLOs themselves have pointed fingers at the Election Commission of India (ECI) for these tragedies. Where is the government's accountability?” he questioned.
The TMC Lok Sabha MP accused the government of negligence, referencing the long queues during demonetisation a decade ago, where the issue of black money persisted. He also raised concerns about terrorist incidents in the national capital, questioning the government's accountability amidst such threats.
“They wish to enjoy accountability without responding to the public,” he asserted.
Banerjee emphasized that while the Opposition aims for smooth functioning of Parliament, it is perplexing why the government appears defensive after its recent electoral success in Bihar.
These comments followed Prime Minister Modi's remarks before the winter session, where he accused the Opposition of using Parliament for pre-election preparation or as an outlet for frustration after defeats. He claimed that there is ample space for theatrics elsewhere, asserting that Parliament should prioritize delivery over drama.
In response, Banerjee argued that winning a few states does not absolve the government from its obligations to the populace.
He cautioned that the same electorate could bring about a change in leadership.
“We are raising concerns regarding Pahalgam and the fatalities linked to the SIR initiative, yet they perceive this as drama. Our objection is not against the SIR, but against its flawed execution,” he articulated.
The TMC leader claimed that BLOs had not received adequate training, that technical glitches in the app used for SIR forms persisted, and that the voter roll had not been digitized for their use.
When the Opposition called for discussions on these critical issues, the Prime Minister dismissed it as drama, Banerjee highlighted.
