Bengaluru, Sep 6 (NationPress) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared his perspective regarding former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pratap Simha's decision to approach the High Court, requesting a stay on the state government's choice to have the historical Dussehra festival inaugurated by Booker Prize laureate Banu Mushtaq. He asserted that the BJP's objection to the inauguration by the acclaimed writer-activist is politically motivated.
This statement was made on Saturday while Siddaramaiah spoke to the media following his participation in 'Gangapooja' and 'Bagina' ceremonies at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Reservoir in Almatti, an event organized by the Water Resources Department along with the Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited.
When questioned about the BJP's disapproval of the decision to have writer Banu Mushtaq inaugurate the state’s Nada Habba (state festival) Dussehra, CM Siddaramaiah commented: “Let the court decide on Pratap Simha’s petition. Previously, there were no objections when writer Nissar Ahmed inaugurated the festival. Why did the BJP remain silent during the processions of Tipu Sultan or Mirza Ismail? The BJP’s disapproval of Banu Mushtaq appears to be politically motivated, and our government will respond accordingly.”
He further emphasized: “There is no evidence indicating that Banu Mushtaq has spoken against Goddess Kannadaambe. She earned the Booker Prize for her English translation of her Kannada work, 'Hrudaya Deepa'. That is the reason both Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Basti have been honored by our state. Being a Kannada writer, she has been invited to inaugurate Dussehra.”
In light of the ongoing debate regarding EVMs versus ballot papers, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “To prevent confusion and disputes surrounding EVMs, the state will suggest to the Election Commission that local body elections be conducted using ballot papers. Numerous countries worldwide have transitioned away from EVMs and reverted to using ballot papers.”
In a notable twist to the ongoing Dussehra controversy in Karnataka, former BJP MP Pratap Simha filed a petition in the High Court on Saturday, seeking to halt the Congress-led government's decision to have Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq inaugurate the historic festival.
This petition was submitted after the state government extended an invitation to Banu Mushtaq, despite facing opposition.
Challenging the government's decision, Pratap Simha appealed to the court, arguing that during the Dussehra inauguration, floral tributes should be presented to the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari.
He highlighted that the tradition involves the recital of Vedas, chanting of mantras, and performing religious rituals, alleging that Banu Mushtaq is 'anti-Hindu'.
“The government has unilaterally selected Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate Dussehra without proper consultations. She has also expressed opinions against the Kannada language,” Pratap Simha claimed.
Additionally, he noted in his petition that the royal family of Mysuru has also voiced opposition to the Karnataka government's decision in this matter.
He added that the government’s choice to permit Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate Dussehra has offended the sentiments of Hindus.
