Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 26 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies stand in a strong position across at least 103 Assembly seats that are set to undergo elections in the coming months.
During a press briefing, CM Sarma stated, "The BJP, along with our coalition partners, holds a robust position in at least 103 out of the total 126 Assembly seats. While I cannot specify the exact number of seats we will secure, it is evident that the opposition parties have minimal influence in these regions."
Sarma further pointed out that all opposition factions, including the Congress, are primarily concentrated on just 23 minority-dominated Assembly seats.
"The opposition's presence is limited to areas with substantial minority voter populations in the state," he remarked.
Previously, CM Sarma emphasized that the BJP's organizational capabilities and its governance track record have positioned the party favorably in at least 103 Assembly constituencies.
He noted that with the BJP currently holding 63 sitting MLAs, it is anticipated that a significant number of new candidates will be nominated for this election cycle.
"Given that we have 63 MLAs, it is expected that around 40 new faces will participate in the Assembly elections for the BJP," CM Sarma indicated, highlighting a strategy aimed at rejuvenation and broader representation.
Regarding alliance dynamics, the Chief Minister reported that discussions on seat-sharing with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and other regional parties, particularly in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), are nearing completion.
He mentioned that the negotiations with alliance partners have been progressing smoothly and are approaching their finalization.
"We have nearly concluded seat-sharing agreements with the Asom Gana Parishad and other regional entities in Bodoland," CM Sarma stated, affirming that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam remains united and prepared for the upcoming elections.
The Chief Minister also conveyed that the final arrangements regarding seat-sharing among coalition partners are expected to be finalized by mid-March.
"The definitive seat-sharing arrangements will be completed by mid-March," he remarked.
CM Sarma reiterated that the BJP-led government's emphasis on development, welfare initiatives, and enhanced governance has bolstered public backing for the party across various regions.
He expressed confidence that the NDA would enter the elections with a clear strategy and a robust organizational framework.
As the Assembly elections in Assam approach, political activities in the state have intensified, with parties ramping up their preparations and alliance discussions gaining traction.
