Guwahati, April 18 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday rejected the claims made by Congress regarding the BJP utilizing fear-mongering strategies against opposition candidates ahead of the Panchayat elections in the state.
CM Sarma stated, "Congress has a singular aim - to tarnish the reputation of Assam. There are about 22,000 villages in the state, yet they only reference one or two."
"Elections will be conducted in a transparent manner. The integrity of Assam must remain intact, and the Congress party constantly seeks to undermine it. If anyone experiences harassment, we will act swiftly. However, we currently lack any such reports. No candidates have lodged complaints with the administration," he added.
CM Sarma further emphasized that speculating about who will win or lose is futile, as there is a general consensus on the likely victorious party in the elections.
"I encourage the opposition to unite in order to gauge the public sentiment in the Panchayat elections, especially with the Assembly elections approaching in Assam next year," he remarked.
The CM previously mentioned that nearly 60 percent of candidates contesting in the forthcoming Panchayat elections in Assam are women.
CM Sarma noted, "The nominations for #AssamPanchayatPolls closed yesterday. 59 percent of our candidates are women. A significant number are under 40, with many having already won uncontested. The NDA is poised for a decisive victory."
The Panchayat elections in Assam were delayed since December due to a court ruling that halted the process.
Now, the elections will take place in two phases on May 2 and 7.
