Assam CM Sarma Critiques Opposition's Lack of Clarity Ahead of Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 26 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered a pointed critique of the Opposition on Thursday, questioning their unity, credibility, and preparedness as the Assam Assembly elections approach. During a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma ridiculed the Opposition's inconsistent positions regarding alliances, asserting that their lack of clarity would ultimately undermine their political significance.
“These parties will declare today that there are no alliances, and the next day they will announce one. This inconsistency has turned into their greatest vulnerability,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Targeting the Congress specifically, Sarma warned that the party risks losing its status as the primary Opposition in the state if it does not achieve decisive results in the elections.
“If things continue this way, the Congress will ultimately forfeit its recognition as an Opposition party in Assam,” he emphasized.
Sarma also raised concerns regarding internal conflicts among Opposition parties, particularly in constituencies with a significant minority electorate.
“Are they battling among themselves over the so-called ‘Miya seats’? Are they already at odds about who will contest in which areas?” Sarma questioned, suggesting fractures within the Opposition coalition even before seat-sharing negotiations commence.
Highlighting the constitutional criteria for Opposition recognition, Sarma stated that any party aspiring to hold that title must secure at least 24 seats on its own in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
“To attain the status of the Opposition, a party must win 24 seats using its symbol. Post-poll alliances and claims will not alter this fact,” he insisted.
The Chief Minister's comments come amidst renewed attempts by Opposition factions to seek a unified front against the ruling BJP-led coalition, despite conflicting statements from their leaders.
Sarma noted that, in contrast, the BJP remains committed to governance, development, and fulfilling its promises to the populace.
“While they are entangled in confusion and contradictions, we are diligently working on the ground and confidently preparing for the elections,” he concluded.
As the Assembly polls near, Sarma’s remarks reflect a bold political stance, as the ruling party aims to leverage perceived disunity among the Opposition.
