Guwahati, July 16 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded fiercely to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, after the Congress leader criticized him over allegations of corruption.
Sarma utilized sarcasm in his response to Gandhi's sharp remarks during his visit to Assam, indicating that the Congress leader had unintentionally enhanced his political standing.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister noted that Gandhi appeared to concentrate entirely on him during his stay in the state.
The Assam CM’s post read, “I must express my gratitude - because today, he has raised my political stature to a height I might never have attained had I remained in the Congress party.”
“He repeatedly mentioned my name in all his meetings,” Sarma added, describing the scrutiny from the LoP as a source of great satisfaction.
Critiquing his former political affiliation, Sarma, who transitioned from Congress to the BJP in 2015, asserted that the recognition he now enjoys wouldn’t have been possible had he stayed with the Congress.
“If Rahul Gandhi has opted to criticize me, it’s a clear indication that I must be making the right choices for the citizens of Assam,” he remarked.
This statement comes amidst intensified political exchanges between the BJP and Congress as both parties prepare for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Additionally, Sarma used X to target Gandhi, stating: “I heard you are currently out on bail for your involvement in the National Herald scam, which exceeds Rs 5,000 crore in corruption. You will be remembered as one of the most corrupt Congress presidents in India. Honestly, I am indifferent to your comments - because I know, and the nation knows, that you are among the most corrupt leaders in India today.”
Earlier that day, Rahul Gandhi launched a fierce attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and predicting that the Chief Minister would eventually face imprisonment.
While addressing party workers in Chaygaon, approximately 40 km from Guwahati, Gandhi claimed that Sarma behaves like a “king” but is “overwhelmed by fear” and will be held accountable for his actions.
“The Chief Minister believes he is a monarch, tirelessly working to hand over Assam’s land and resources,” Gandhi alleged.
“But if you observe closely, his televised appearances reflect fear. He understands that Congress members will ensure he is jailed.”
The Leader of Opposition further asserted that Sarma and his family would be exposed for their alleged corruption.
“Not even Narendra Modi and Amit Shah will be able to protect him. The people of Assam - the youth, farmers, laborers, and citizens from all backgrounds - will demand accountability,” he emphasized.
