Guwahati, Sep 10 (NationPress) The President of Assam Congress and Lok Sabha MP, Gaurav Gogoi, has vehemently responded to the accusations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding his alleged connections with Pakistan, which followed the release of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report.
Gogoi contended that CM Sarma has resorted to making fabricated statements to conceal the rampant corruption within his administration. Speaking to the media, he stated: “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been fabricating statements to distract from the extensive corruption occurring in his government. He has exploited his position as Chief Minister to amass personal wealth, disregarding the intelligence of the Assamese people who can recognize his lies.”
The Congress leader also asserted that Sarma would be unable to retain his position in the upcoming Assembly elections due to the widespread dissatisfaction among the populace towards the ruling party.
“The public has already decided to remove the BJP from power in Assam. The next government will prioritize the welfare of the poor and unemployed, unlike Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is focused on enriching his family. Numerous leaders from the BJP have joined the Congress in response to the corruption under Sarma’s administration, along with many intellectuals from civil society,” Gogoi remarked.
Earlier, Sarma claimed that the SIT, formed by the state Cabinet earlier this year to investigate the alleged anti-India activities of a Pakistani national, had uncovered “startling facts” indicating a broader conspiracy against the nation.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister indicated that the SIT, established on February 17, 2025, was assigned to investigate one Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his associates. According to Sarma, the inquiry has revealed disturbing information that extends beyond individual actions and points to a larger plot aimed at undermining India’s sovereignty.
“The SIT has also identified the involvement of a British national, who is married to an Indian Member of Parliament, in the misconduct linked to Ali Tauqeer Sheikh,” Sarma elaborated.
He further claimed that the investigation has shown how Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior facilitated a sitting MP from Assam's visit to that country.
“The involvement of Pakistan’s official machinery in such interactions is a serious concern,” he added.
Sarma concluded by stating that the Assam government would thoroughly review the SIT report before presenting it to the state Cabinet, promising that the findings would be made public after Cabinet discussions.
