New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) The Congress party intensified its critique of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, accusing him of fabricating allegations for political gain and casting doubts on the operations of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Assam government.

In response to Sarma’s comments, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi questioned the seriousness of the SIT's investigation, asking whether it was genuinely pursuing evidence or merely engaging in press conferences. “What is the actual role of the SIT? Will it just hold press briefings, or will it present evidence if any is found?” he inquired, suggesting that the ongoing exchange of accusations was purely aimed at electoral advantages.

He further asserted, “The language he used when he was part of the Congress is well-documented, and the current rhetoric being employed as a BJP member is also visible to the nation. The attempts to incite and mislead the people of Assam must cease. The Chief Minister is aware that the Congress will soon relieve him of his position, with Gaurav Gogoi being his most significant political adversary.”

Pratapgarhi also criticized the selective media attention, arguing that the Chief Minister’s statements had not garnered the scrutiny they deserved. “Had an Opposition Chief Minister used such language, the media would have highlighted it by now. Yet, astonishingly, not a single channel has addressed how the language from a state Chief Minister is fascist and dictatorial during prime time,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla dismissed Sarma’s allegations as entirely unfounded, offering a robust defense of Gaurav Gogoi and his family. “Gaurav Gogoi’s father served as Assam Chief Minister for 15 years. They are patriots. It is unjust to make such accusations against them,” Shukla remarked.

The Congress's response followed Sarma's recent political attack on Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding the British citizenship of his two children. Sarma asserted that this issue raised significant questions about the personal choices of public representatives, drawing parallels with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and alleging contradictions in previous statements regarding the matter.

The Chief Minister also connected the issue to an ongoing SIT investigation, making claims about Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan in 2013, which he argued raised national security concerns.

In the meantime, Gogoi has vehemently rejected the allegations, labeling the SIT probe as politically motivated and intended to distract from governance failures. He expressed confidence in constitutional institutions and his willingness to cooperate with any lawful investigations, while warning against the misuse of agencies for political ends.
