Should the Centre Investigate Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's Alleged Pakistan Links?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 8 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized on Sunday that the claims involving Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi, the wife of Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, are extremely serious and should not be dismissed lightly.
Speaking to the media, CM Sarma remarked that the connection of a sitting Member of Parliament elevates the matter beyond a mere routine investigation.
“These allegations are significant. When a current MP, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress party in Parliament, is implicated with Pakistan in any form, the issue automatically gains greater importance,” stated the Chief Minister.
CM Sarma disclosed that the matter was first investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam Police. Following the SIT's findings, a formal case was opened at the CID police station for additional inquiry.
According to the Chief Minister, the SIT submitted its findings to the state government, which then brought the matter before the Assam Cabinet. After thorough discussions, the Cabinet determined that the seriousness, sensitivity, and broader implications of the allegations warranted an investigation by a central agency.
“After a detailed review of the SIT report, the state Cabinet believes that the case should be transferred to a central agency for a more in-depth investigation,” CM Sarma remarked.
He added that the state government plans to officially request the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to take over the investigation.
The Chief Minister clarified that the process of handing over the case will commence once the Ministry of Home Affairs provides its approval.
“We have decided to refer the matter to the MHA. Once we receive a favorable response from the Ministry, the case will be officially transferred to the Central government,” he explained.
CM Sarma emphasized that this decision was made in the interest of national security and transparency, underlining that matters involving cross-border connections and public officials must be investigated thoroughly and impartially.
He reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a fair and credible investigation, assuring that all actions are being taken strictly in accordance with the law.
