Guwahati, May 26 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, escalated his criticism of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday, alleging ties to Pakistan.
Sarma referenced a statement from senior Congress figure Ripun Bora, who purportedly indicated a significant breach of national security — that Gogoi's British wife was allegedly receiving compensation from the Pakistani government.
“If this claim holds any truth,” Sarma posted on X, “it raises profoundly concerning questions regarding our national security.”
He stressed that having someone linked to an adversarial foreign entity in the personal life of a serving Member of Parliament “constitutes a serious and intolerable threat to the integrity of India’s institutions.”
This assertion, which still lacks solid evidence, has sparked anxiety across political lines. Sarma noted that the government was previously unaware of these “shocking revelations,” but now that they are public, they are being investigated with the seriousness they deserve.
“National security is non-negotiable,” the Chief Minister stated.
The Assam government plans to document Ripun Bora’s statement to authenticate the allegations, with further action anticipated. Currently, neither Gaurav Gogoi nor his wife has made a public statement.
The Congress party retaliated on Sunday, launching a fierce critique against Chief Minister Sarma, accusing him of attempting to malign MP Gaurav Gogoi by labeling him an ISI agent — a strategy the party claims stems from worries about the upcoming 2026 state elections.
During a press briefing, senior Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora asserted that Sarma is unsettled by Gogoi’s rising popularity, perceiving him as a significant threat to his political aspirations.
“Himanta Biswa Sarma is convinced he will lose the election if Congress names Gaurav Gogoi as its chief ministerial candidate. Gogoi’s increasing acceptance within the state has evidently shaken him,” Bora remarked.
Bora highlighted Gogoi’s triumph in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat during the 2024 general elections — despite what he described as a comprehensive effort by the BJP to undermine him — as proof of the MP’s ascending political position.
“The Chief Minister is attempting to brand Gogoi as an ISI agent without offering any evidence. These unfounded claims are not taken seriously by anyone,” Bora claimed.
In defense of Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn, a British national working for an international NGO with operations in Pakistan, Bora dismissed any insinuation of misconduct.
“She might have worked in Pakistan or received a salary for her contributions. What’s wrong with that? Numerous Pakistanis legally work in India as well,” he contended.
Bora drew parallels, mentioning that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's wife is Japanese, and one of their children holds British citizenship.
“Does that raise questions about Jaishankar's patriotism?” he queried, adding that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s family has professional associations with Pakistan.
Additionally, Bora elaborated that Gogoi’s children maintain British citizenship for practical reasons regarding international travel, currently residing with their mother.
Bora suggested that Sarma’s recent accusations against Gogoi might be linked to internal discussions within the Congress about promoting the MP as Assam Congress president.
“The moment Sarma sensed that Gaurav Gogoi could be elevated in the party, he resurrected this Pakistan issue to hinder his ascent. The people of Assam will not be swayed by such tactics,” Bora asserted.
