Guwahati, July 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, intensified his exchange of words with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday, sharply addressing the latter’s recent assertion that he (Biswa) would be incarcerated.
During a press interaction, the Chief Minister dismissed Gandhi's comments as “politically driven” and accused the LoP of neglecting significant issues in Assam.
“If this keeps up, Rahul Gandhi might find himself behind bars,” Sarma remarked, alluding to the recent actions of the Enforcement Directorate regarding properties purportedly associated with Rahul Gandhi’s brother-in-law, Robert Vadra.
“Numerous jails in India appear to be awaiting the Gandhis,” he further stated, directly responding to the earlier claims made by LoP Rahul Gandhi.
Mocking the political influence of LoP Rahul Gandhi, Sarma questioned the Congress leader's claim that he could have him arrested.
“He’s merely a Member of Parliament, yet he claims he’ll apprehend a Chief Minister? This is ridiculous,” Sarma emphasized. “Those behind bars cannot arrest those outside. Let’s see if he finds himself in that position.”
The Chief Minister also took a jab at the Congress party for its lack of a meaningful agenda for Assam, asserting that their only mission seems to be targeting him personally.
“They avoid discussing employment, land rights, or our heritage,” he stated. “Their sole slogan appears to be to imprison Himanta Biswa Sarma. Who would support a party that promotes just one fabricated narrative?”
Previously, Sarma addressed LoP Rahul Gandhi’s harsh remarks during his state visit, suggesting that the Congress leader had inadvertently boosted his political profile.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister noted that Rahul Gandhi seemed to have concentrated exclusively on him during his visit.
The Assam CM’s X post stated, “I must express my gratitude—because today, he has elevated my political stature to a level I might never have attained had I remained in the Congress party.”
“He repeatedly mentioned my name in all his meetings,” the Chief Minister added, noting that such recognition from the Leader of the Opposition was a source of “great satisfaction.”
Taking a jab at his former affiliation, Sarma, who transitioned from Congress to the BJP in 2015, indicated that the acknowledgment he now enjoys would not have been feasible had he stayed with Congress.
LoP Rahul Gandhi had previously launched a fierce critique of Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Assam on Wednesday, charging him with corruption and asserting that the Chief Minister would eventually face jail time.
During a meeting with party members in Chaygaon, approximately 40 km from Guwahati, LoP Rahul Gandhi claimed that Sarma acts like a “raja” but is “overcome with fear” and will face accountability for his actions.
