Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 10 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and former Maharashtra minister Naseem Khan has expressed his support for the Bombay High Court's ruling to examine the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) utilized in the Chandivali Assembly constituency, labeling it a “historic” move that may help clarify longstanding uncertainties regarding the electoral process nationwide.
In a conversation with IANS on Friday, Khan remarked that the court's decision represents a pivotal moment in restoring public trust in the reliability of EVMs, which have faced significant scrutiny recently. “Our petition clearly articulated our concerns about the EVMs. We suspect they may have been compromised and incorrectly programmed. We have numerous reservations,” Khan stated.
He further noted that during the inspection set for April 16 or 17, the Congress party intends to present all their inquiries and concerns to the relevant authorities and call for a comprehensive investigation.
“This ruling by the High Court is undeniably historic. It will assist in addressing the doubts surrounding the electoral process across the country, tackle the suspicions directed at the Election Commission, and provide answers regarding the functioning of these machines. We will feel assured once the inspection concludes,” he asserted.
Khan also highlighted that the Bombay High Court's decision could establish a crucial precedent, especially for the Chandivali seat. He expressed optimism that following the inspection, the Election Commission should conduct a thorough investigation into all concerns raised by the party.
The senior Congress leader confirmed that the party has already submitted the required fees to the Maharashtra Election Commission for the EVM inspection. He called for transparency from the Commission, stating, “If the Maharashtra Election Commission has undertaken any specific actions before the EVM inspection, they should keep us informed. We have indeed paid the fees for the inspection of the EVMs.”
This development is particularly noteworthy amid ongoing discussions and allegations from various opposition parties concerning the trustworthiness and safety of Electronic Voting Machines in Indian elections.
