Harare, July 30 (NationPress) Former captain Brendan Taylor has been reinstated into the Zimbabwe squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand, scheduled to take place from August 7-11 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

At the age of 39, Taylor has become eligible for selection following the end of a three-and-a-half-year ban enforced by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This suspension resulted from his admission of violating both the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

Since his disciplinary action, Taylor has committed himself to a comprehensive rehabilitation program addressing drug and alcohol issues. Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) noted that he has exhibited a persistent dedication to personal improvement, accountability, and rebuilding trust.

ZC also mentioned that Taylor's transition back into the national team began prior to the ongoing first Test against New Zealand, where he was invited to practice with the squad. To date, Taylor has participated in 34 Tests, boasting an average of 36.25, with six centuries and 12 fifties.

“I truly believed my time was over, but here I am – and it’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I have to pinch myself to realize I’m actually here. I’ve been absorbing it all and cherishing every moment. It’s been a wonderful reintegration. The past year and a half has been dedicated to my comeback,” expressed Taylor.

“I’ve invested significant effort – in fitness, technique, and diet – and I feel leaner, fitter, and mentally stronger. This transformation has only been achievable through sobriety. I’ve relished this personal journey of rebuilding, and I feel fantastic,” Taylor stated.

With a total of 9,938 international runs across all formats, he stands as Zimbabwe’s third-highest run-scorer, holding the record for 17 international centuries, the highest among his compatriots. “Brendan has faced an exceptionally challenging period in his life, displaying genuine remorse and a strong determination to rectify his past mistakes – not just for himself but for the betterment of cricket in Zimbabwe,” ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni said.

“He has diligently worked behind the scenes, maintained discipline throughout his rehabilitation, and has now justifiably reclaimed his position in the national setup. We’re pleased to see him thriving again. His experience, skill, and passion for the game will undoubtedly add great value to the team,” Makoni added.
